BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION 

Born and raised in Los Angeles, City Treasurer Velasco attended Loyola High School and Loyola University. 

Mr. Velasco served in Korea and is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.  He was appointed by President Reagan to the Selective Service Review Board where he served as Chairman.  Upon his return from Korea, he entered the broadcasting industry.  He was hired at KFI Radio where he worked with Lohman and Barkely, Vince Scully and Chick Hearn.  During his 30 years in broadcasting he was involved as shop steward and executive board member of I.B.E.W. and N.A.B.E.T.  He served on the Community Development Advisory Board in 1974. 

Mr. Velasco was elected in 1976 to the City Council and served for 10 years.  He was a candidate to the State Assembly in 1986 for the 60th Assembly District.  He believes in giving back to the community and has worked as Blood Bank Chairman, the Holy Name Society, the Finance Committee and as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister in his church.  He is also a member of the Moose, Elks, Knights of Columbus and was a volunteer on the State Hispanic/Farm Labor Advisory Committee.

Mr. Velasco was elected City Treasurer in 1992 and has worked for 18 years representing the people of the community.  He is involved in the California Municipal Treasurers and has been a member of the Chamber of Commerce on the Legislation Committee.

He is married to Theresa (Tess) for 54 years and has 6 children and 11 grandchildren.  In their younger years, he served with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts and received the Silver Beaver Award. 

City Treasurer Velasco’s job is to receive and protect City funds, invest the funds wisely and pay bills with proper authorization.  At times, he has to question some of the bills being paid.
