During the November 2008 General Election, voters of the City of El Monte approved Measure GG, the Essential City Services Preservation and Protection Measure which establishes a one-half of one percent (½%) “transactions and use tax” in the City of El Monte. Transactions and use taxes, like th:e one approved by El Monte voters, are also referred to as “District Taxes” by the California State Board of Equalization which is the State agency responsible for overseeing the collection of such taxes statewide. Measure GG was approved as a “general tax” within the meaning of Proposition 218 and its proceeds may be used for any general city purposes.
